S3 Won't Boot After Upgrade

Postby raianoat on Sun Dec 20, 2009 9:58 am

Last night I upgraded my stock S3 hard drive with a WD 1 TB Drive (WD10EVDS). I saw on TC that this was one of the drives that works without any problems. I copied the stock drive over to the new drive using MFSLive (not WinMFS). I issued the following command to perform the copy.

backup -qTao - /dev/sda | restore -s 128 -xzpi - /dev/sdb

During the backup I did receive one error however, the backup seemed to go ok otherwise (take a look at the attached screenshots). When I put the new hd into my Series 3 the DVR wouldn't completely boot. The lights on the front are all lit however, the device isn't showing anything on my TV. Does anybody have any idea what the problem could be?

Thanks!

If you have another computer, try that.
It might be Linux driver problem for your motherboard.

Also, check the hard drive w/ WD diagnostic tool to make sure it is good.

My only other computer is a Mac. I was going to try and using WinMFS via VMWare Fusion on my Mac. Do you know of any problems with that approach?

Thanks!

I don't think that approach works well.

Try booting directly using MFSLive Linux CD if you have Intel based MAC.

I just backed up and restored my drive using WinMFS and VMWare Fusion. The process seems to have worked however, my TiVo won't boot once again. Here's a copy of the MFSInfo output. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That mfsinfo looks like it's from a stock drive.
Did you post the right one?

If it's stuck at "Welcome" or "almost there" screen
you might want to check out the kernel log from Tivo drive on partition 9.

Maybe your original drive is damaged. In that case, you might be better off using dd_rescue found on MFSLive Linux cd.

Is it possible that I need to run the "Fix Bootpage" option?

Your bootpage looks fine.
What is the Manufactured date on the hard drive?
DCM?
Green Circuitboard (PCB) rev. #?
Where did you buy that drive?

For the hell of it I tried the fix bootpage command but like you suggested it didn't fix my problem.

It appears as though newer models of the WD10EVDS have a problem with their Intellipark feature. Here's instructions on how to disable it. http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/sh ... 70784#drey

I plan on performing this task later tonight and I'll post back if this does infact fix my issue....

Yes. All the latest WD Green models including their AV models suffer from that problem.
Even the WD10EVVS they put in their TiVo HDXL. :(
Time to switch to Seagate Pipeline, Hitachi, Samsung ...
