Solved -Inode 0 error & expanding capacity after dd_rescue

Postby ognol » Wed Aug 12, 2009 9:20 pm

Tried to use WinMFS MFSCopy to copy a 120 gb HD to a 320 HD without success on a Toshiba RS-TX20. WinMFS hangs on Partition 10 at 4 bars on the progress meter. So after about 3 hours, I canceled out and deleted the format of the 320 GB drive. Tried to just restore two different truncated images I had made but I get "error writing media inode 0" So I assume that there is a problem with the backup from the original 120 GB drive. When I try to select the 320 drive after the restore, I get Error number 9 Error reading from zone map. I put the original 120 GB back into the Toshiba and it works. Any suggestions?

Please see my post below dated 10/29/09 for final resolution

Thought I'd try again to see if anyone has any possible solution for this problem.

Your hard drive might have bad sectors.
Try dd_rescue found on mfslive linux cd.

Thanks. i just ordered a 160 GB HD from the seagate Outlet sale tonight. I'll try dd_rescue when I get that drive.

Since i will be upgrading from a 120 GB drive to a 160 GB drive on my Toshiba RS-TX20 ( Series 2)(, do I just run the command "backup -qTao - /dev/hda | restore -s 128 -fzi - /dev/hdc" after completing dd_rescue to get the full capacity of the 160 GB drive?

Re: How do I know if expand capacity worked after dd_rescue?

Postby ognol » Wed Oct 28, 2009 2:31 pm

dd_rescue worked, but I'm not sure if the capacity was expanded. I went from a 120GB to a 160 GB drive. After dd_rescue, I ran the command "backup -qTao - /dev/hda | restore -s 128 -fzi - /dev/hdc" I had some trouble interpreting where "spaces" go in the command, but after a couple of error messages, the command looked liked it finally executed. However, after I booted up the RS-TX20, the capacity showed the same as the OEM drive. Would it be easier to expand the capacity with Win MFS? Also, can i now make a truncated image using the new hard drive even though the last image failed on the the old drive?

Do dd_rescue first, then, mfsadd
That's it.

Spike,

Thanks!
Guess I misinterpreted the instructions on the dd_rescue guide page. I'll give mfsadd a shot using WinMFS since it will be easier than reconfiguring the PC I already put back together again after using MFSLive. While I'm doing that, I might as well make a truncated backup for future use.

Thanks again for these programs and your help.

Just thought I'd update with my results in case anyone else is following this thread and could benefit from my experience. I tried to upgrade the capacity of the 160 GB drive using WinMFS. Luckily I made a backup truncated image prior to trying to run MFSAdd because as soon as I tried to run MFSAdd, WinMFS crashed. I tried WinMFS again a couple of times after disconnecting and reconnecting the drive. As soon as I tried to select the drive, WinMFS would crash. When I put the drive in the RS-TX20, it just went into an endless reboot loop. So, I decided to run dd_rescue again using the original drive and transferring the data again to the 160 GB. While I was doing this I decided to restore the truncated backup to another 160 GB drive ( I had bought two of the same drive). That restored without a problem and MFSAdd ran without a problem, This drive booted up fine.

After dd_rescue finished on the other drive, I ran the "mfsadd -r 4 -x /dev/hdc" command from the MFSLive boot CD. It worked. Just put this drive back into the RS-TX20 and it booted up without a problem and showed the correct capacity ( 187 hours). I now have two new working 160 GB drives, one with my old recordings and one without to use as backup, as well as a working image.

FYI - for those looking for a replacement DVD drive for the RS-TX20, the Pioneer DVR-116D worked for me. I also understand the Pioneer DVR-115D also works.

You can't. You have to boot from the MFSLive cd to use dd_rescue.

Thanks - nothing is going right for me with this :(

cue violins :) ...
I'm doing this on a laptop using 2 USB connections, one of the power supplies blew up after 30 min, backups gave me mixed results, the first 2 times the file was only 20Mb. One copy looked like it worked but WinMFS crashed after it asked if I wanted to use the extra space and didn't finish the copy. And now the restore to a larger drive is giving me inode issues. I burned the boot CD and my laptop won't let me boot from CD and I don't know my BIOS password.

It's just been one of those IT projects that has failed at every hurdle.

I suspect the faulty power supply may have done something to the disc when it blew.

20 MB is much too small, My images are close to 300 MB. You should really run MFSLive from a desktop where you can disconnect your existing windows OS drive. If you don't, you can mistakenly overwrite your existing OS if you don't follow the instructions carefully. If you are not used to linux command line, you can very easily choose the wrong hard drive.

Thanks for the caution. It would really put the icing on the cake if I lost my laptop too.

sorry for the double post ... I tried
ddresue -A -v /dev/sda /dev/sdb

I did sda rather than hda as that's what it displayed in Linux as it was booting, is that a potential problem?

It progressed through with lots of I/O errors and finished around 13% (I had removed most programs)

When I tried running MFSADD via WinMFS it said it wasn't a Tivo drive :/
